Summer in NYC
For three weeks this summer, I attended a summer intensive program at the New School (specifically at Parsons) in New York. I wanted to further develop my sewing skills and immerse myself in the fast pace of NYC.
Each day was filled with movement; no sitting, no stopping, no sleeping. In short, it really felt like how everyone describes New York. In the moment though, it just felt like a constant rhythm. I would wake up, get ready in 20 minutes (much less than the time it takes me at home), eat breakfast, go to class, eat lunch, go back to class, leave for the dorms, go out, come back, and then do it all over again the next day.
My roommate and I would go out almost every night, whether it was to the High Line, Rockefeller Center, Joe's Pizza; New York is never short of things to do. We became well-versed in how to take the metro, and decidedly used it almost everyday. We met amazing people in our classes who shared the same interests as ourselves. We found fun in the stupidest of activities (including but not limited to: chasing down Taylor Swift's house not once, but twice, going to Mood too many times to count, and searching what felt like thousands of stores to find the right sewing supplies).
My classes at Parsons were also truly enriching. The people I became close with in my class were innovative and talented but also hilarious, quirky, and fun.We all learned to use an industrial machine (not without some difficulty, a bit of screaming, and some tears), re-purpose old garments, and make simple patterns. I had experience with many of the skills taught in the class, but it was interesting to observe new ways to approach projects and to experiment with up-cycling.
For first time visitors to New York, I found a few spots that I love and would definitely recommend:
- Joe's Pizza for a good New York slice
- Milk for some amazing soft-serve
- by Chloe for a quick bite
- The Frick Museum
- The MOMA which offers free admission Friday nights
- The beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral
... and of course all of the other amazing spots: Central Park, the High Line, the Met, and many more...
Below are some pictures of my work at Parsons and at some of the places mentioned above.
Enjoy! :)
